CHENNAI: PMK Chairman Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday sought clarification from the state government on the status of the proposed ordinance to ban online rummy in the state.
Expressing his disappointment at the government for delaying the issuance of the ordinance even 12 days after the committee of experts tabled its report on the matter, Anbumani said, “The government of Tamil Nadu has admitted all the evils of rummy on line. This should not leave room for second thought or hesitation on the matter now.
Referring to the murder of a woman named Sivaranjani allegedly by her husband Narasimharaj who had recently lost hundreds of thousands of dollars online gambling, Ramadoss junior said Sivaranjani was the 25th online gambling victim since the High Court of Madras invalidated an earlier law on August 3. 2021.
Claiming that she was the fifth person to be murdered due to online gambling, Anbumani recalled the assurance given by Chief Minister MK Stalin the day he led an agitation here demanding an immediate ban on rummy online, and wondered, “Will the cabinet meeting approve an order banning online gambling? If so, was the order sent for the Governor’s assent? If it was not approved by the cabinet, what was the reason? What action will the state government take on the report of the expert committee? Should the government clarify the people of the state? But the government remains silent.
Remarking that Tamil Nadu would face drastic socio-economic effects if online gambling was not banned immediately, the PMK chairman said the state government should clarify the current status of the ordinance.
“If the prescription is not ready, the practice must be called immediately and the prescription approved. It should then be forwarded for the Governor’s assent,” he added.
