Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday launched “Azadi Quest”, a series of online educational games based on India’s freedom struggle, developed in collaboration with Zynga India.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Thakur said the move was part of the government’s efforts to recognize the contributions of freedom fighters and “unsung heroes”.

“These games are an effort to tap into the huge market of online gamers and educate them through gaming. Various branches of the Indian government have collected information on unsung freedom fighters in corners of the country.” Azadi Quest” is an effort to make learning this knowledge engaging and interactive,” he said.

Stating that people of all ages would be hooked on mobile games, the Union minister said they would quickly become household favourites.

Mr. Thakur said the Ministry of I&B has continuously taken steps to boost the Animation, Visual Effects, Games and Comics (AVGC) industry in the country. “Over the past few years, India has risen to the top five countries in the gaming industry. The gaming industry grew by 28% in 2021… the number of online gamers grew by 8% from 2020 to 2021 and by 2023, the number of such players is expected to reach 45 crores,” he said.

The Union Minister said that the “Azadi Quest” games will also enhance the capacity of the AVGC sector in India. Information on these games has been organized by the Publications Division of the Indian Council of Historical Research. He also acknowledged the contribution made by Zynga India.

The games are available for Android and iOS devices in English and Hindi for the people of India and will be available globally from September 2022. During a year-long partnership between the publishing division and Zynga India , other games of this type would be introduced and the existing games those expanded.

“The Azadi Quest series will impart knowledge of India’s freedom struggle and the legends of the country’s great freedom fighters, thereby inducing in players a sense of pride and a sense of duty and helping to eliminate the sense colonial mindset as also emphasized by the Prime Minister in the 76th Independence Day speech as ‘Amrit Kaal’s Panch Pran’,” the ministry said in a statement.
