Google is improving its online education tools to teach kids to be safe online.

Four years ago, Google launched “Be Internet Awesome,” an online training program designed to help teachers and parents teach young children safe Internet behaviors. Today they announced an expansion of the program by introducing 11 new lessons and improvements to the original content.

Google commissioned the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire to evaluate the program. From this assessment, it appears that participants do show an improvement in their understanding of online behaviors.

The enhanced curriculum now offers more content targeted at specific ages, improved tools for teachers and parents, and has expanded content to cover increasingly important online video and gaming topics. Is this going to be the one-size-fits-all for all of our internet behavior problems? of course not, but it’s much better than having no tools at all.

Like any program like this, this should be a starting point. Parents and teachers can use these tools to educate the child and as a starting point for a discussion on these topics.

All of our kids are now years older and I know for myself that I will be sitting down with my 8 year old daughter this weekend and doing the program with her.
