At just 25, Michelle Battersby quit her job at a major investment bank after a conversation with Bumble’s global managing director. Battersby then launched the highly successful dating app in Australia before moving on to another successful start-up, Keep it Cleaner, as Marketing Manager. Now, she’s taken the plunge to found her own business, a creative app called Sunroom.
The journey from ideation to launch is often overlooked when thinking about successful start-ups. It’s hard to remember when browsing Forbes’ rich list that most entrepreneurs went through times when they struggled to maintain momentum or manage doubt.
In this episode, the founder of Sunroom joins business journalist Amelia McGuire to explain how she maintains momentum and deals with periods of self-doubt in her career.
Battersby said the lockdowns from COVID-19 may have saved her from exhaustion, “Everyone was forced to sit still. I absolutely hated having to stop suddenly, ”she said.
Although she had been thinking about starting her own business for some time, Battersby was concerned when she was first approached about Sunroom. done Keep it Cleaner and it’s also a success, when you finally take the leap to find something, you feel the pressure to do it again and meet expectations and not let anyone down or yourself, ”he said. she declared.
“I also think the fear of failure can also be a great motivating force, if you learn to channel it the right way,” she said.
She says it’s easy to stay motivated when you’re surrounded by such a passionate team, “I feel like I’ve been three weeks away from launch for the past seven months … we are constantly circulating the wins, let’s share things and rally around each other, ”she said.
According to Battersby, the designer economy is only going to intensify, “I don’t think we’ve seen anything yet,” she said.
She said the “immediate feedback loop” provided by the creators will continue to grow over time and this level of brand accessibility has never been achieved before.
“The fact that the creators attended the Met Gala, I think, is a huge indication of the influence these people have and the power they have. I very much doubt that Anna Wintour thought she would invite creators to the Met even three years ago, let alone five years, “she continued.
