What could have been in Indiana

Earlier this month, the Lotteries Commission attempted to add online gaming to its assortment of options. However, state lawmakers have used the language in HB 1260 to prevent the lottery from developing without the consent of the legislator.

The interference by state lawmakers was welcomed by retail lottery ticket sellers, many of whom were unhappy with the addition of online gaming.

Retailers argued that Lotteries Act 1989 was outdated because lawmakers did not consider cellphones or the Internet when making the law.

Prior to legislative interference, Speaker of the House Todd Huston wanted to make sure lottery ticket sellers were okay with the change.

“I want to make sure whatever is done supports local retailers, the money stays in local communities. I’ve made it extremely clear that I expect local retailers to support it and you need to make sure they’re, you know, amazing participants in these types of discussions.

Although the prospect of online lottery games is not over, the commission will need the approval of the General Assembly before moving forward.

Had Indiana legalization of online lottery salesit would have been the ninth state in the United States to do so.

Indiana has other gambling problems

In February, state Representative Ethan Manning and Doug Gutwein deposit House Bill 1356, which aimed to legalize IN online casino gaming. Unfortunately, Bill died two weeks later after being unable to make it out of the Public Policy Committee.
