KOCHI: The National Service Scheme (NSS) for Vocational Upper Secondary Education (VHSE) explores the possibilities of gamification in education for online courses. NSS is partnering with Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) to conduct a training program for gamification teachers.
The decision was made in light of the urgent need to improve learner engagement in online courses in the state and the impact that gamification can create to achieve this.
Manu Melwin Joy, Assistant Professor, School of Management Studies, Cusat, and expert in gamification, will offer teachers a management development program on the theme “Gamification for learning and development”. Joy has volunteered to run seven free three-day training packages (additional packages will be included as needed) to VHSE teachers as part of the CSR activity of the School of Management Studies.
The official launch of the program took place on Wednesday and the pro-vice-chancellor of Cusat, PG Sankaran, inaugurated the training program. General Education Director Jeevan Babu K released the training poster by handing it to VHSE Deputy Director Anil Kumar TV in the presence of NSS-VHSE Project Manager Santhosh Kumar VS at DPI Headquarters , in Thiruvananthapuram.
“The pandemic has changed the lives of everyone, including teachers. Switching from traditional teaching to online teaching was a challenge for educators because the suddenness with which they were immersed in this new mode of teaching meant that they started it with little preparation. So initiatives to equip teachers to be digitally competent to excel in classrooms are the need of the hour, ”Babu said.
“The training programs will be delivered in the evenings without affecting the teachers’ normal work routine. All sessions are designed in a highly interactive and gamified manner so that teachers get a feel for how to incorporate gamification into online education.
In addition to online training, teachers will receive one-on-one hands-on training on gamification in their classroom using homework and live simulations. Certificates will be issued to all teachers who successfully complete the training program by attending all sessions and submitting all assignments.
Based on attendance and involvement, 10 teachers will receive the award for the best participant in the farewell ceremony, ”Joy said.
NSS-VHSE program coordinator Ranjith P said that for each batch, 90 teachers from the state’s roster of over 7,000 VHSE teachers will be included on a self-nominated basis.
