APPRENTICESHIP DESIGNER (THREE YEAR TERM TERM)
POST-LEVEL PERIODS 9 – 7 (DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • providing curriculum, learning and instructional design services to develop programs delivered entirely online;
  • Develop interactive teaching materials suitable for fully online learning in collaboration with subject matter experts, graphic designers and videographers;
  • Provide front-line support through channels such as telephone, email, chat, web conferencing and walk-in consultations, and act as a single point of contact to assist academic staff;
  • Model effective design practices and create engaging learning activities and compelling course content that improves retention and transfer;
  • Manage and facilitate training opportunities related to fully online learning for individuals and large groups and align these opportunities with the strategic objectives of the University;
  • Project management of multiple development teams and projects;
  • Teach fully online modules and model best practices;
  • Conduct research on topics related to fully online learning and disseminate the results;
  • Participate in marketing and liaison activities, e.g. maintaining the department’s website, developing marketing materials for new fully online programs and building a social media presence;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Post level 9:

  • A relevant honors degree (e.g., in Computer-Integrated Education, Educational Technology, Curriculum Development, or Academic Development), OR
  • An honors level qualification in any academic discipline, with extensive experience in technology integration, e-learning or distance learning;

Post level 8:

  • A relevant master’s degree (for example, in computer-integrated education, educational technology, curriculum development, or academic development), OR
  • A Masters level qualification in any academic discipline, with extensive experience in technology integration, e-learning or distance learning.

Post level 7:

  • A relevant PhD (for example, in computer-integrated education, educational technology, curriculum development, or academic development), OR
  • Doctoral level degree in any academic discipline, with extensive experience in technology integration, e-learning or distance learning.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIORAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • In-depth knowledge of learning theories, teaching strategies and best practices in an online learning environment;
  • In-depth knowledge of higher education policy frameworks as they relate to curriculum design, teaching, learning, assessment, educational technology, open educational resources, distance learning, and student success ;
  • Level of computer expertise, technical skills and ability to troubleshoot;
  • Proven knowledge of learning management systems, authoring systems, and e-learning tools
  • Thorough knowledge of web and visual design principles;
  • Advanced level of visual design skills (e.g. Articulate 360, Rise, Photoshop, Illustrator or similar software) and storyboarding ability;
  • Advanced level of ability to write effective texts, educational texts and audio/video scripts;
  • Basic knowledge of programming, computer hardware and network configuration;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Decision-making and leadership skills;
  • Expertise in conflict resolution and relationship building;
  • Adaptability and willingness to face constant changes;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Organizational skills, including attention to detail and multitasking;
  • Ability to work under pressure and tolerance to high stress levels

The all-inclusive compensation package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s appointment level, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
