Ministry of Education to hold ‘toy hackathon’ to develop innovative Indian online games and toys

The Ministry of Education will organize a hackathon for students of higher education institutions. “Our toy market has huge potential and students can play a very important role in tapping it. Therefore, the @EduMinOfIndia will soon be organizing a hackathon for students in higher education institutions for innovations in technology and design of toys, including online games, to reflect Indian ethics and values,” Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank wrote on Twitter.

The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for boosting India’s toy manufacturing and global footprint. The Prime Minister said that India is home to several toy groups and thousands of artisans who produce indigenous toys that not only have a cultural connection but also help develop life skills and psychomotor skills of children at a early age. He said such clusters should be promoted through innovative and creative methods as stated by the government’s official statement.

This is part of the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaigns under ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’.

The Prime Minister said that toys aligned with Indian culture and ethics should be used as educational tools in all Anganwadi centers and schools for the comprehensive development of children. Modi said India should harness the huge potential in this field and lead the international digital game industry by developing games inspired by Indian culture and folk tales.

The Ministry of Education has in the past organized several hackathons including the Smart India Hackathon (SIH). During the SIH 2020 Grand Final, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended.

As with any hackathon, students will be required to develop a design from ideation to product format in a limited time for the toy hackathon. These toys will be judged on the innovation aspect. Although the application process has not yet started, it is expected to be released soon. The competition will take place at the national level.
