Online gaming addiction, which often leads to serious consequences such as suicide, continues unabated among Odisha’s youth and children.
Recently, a 19-year-old from Hatadiha village in Keonjhar district lost nearly 24,000 rupees from his father’s bank account in online games and ran away from home to escape reprimands from his family.
The youngster, Khageswar Nayak, allegedly linked his farmer father’s bank account to a money transfer app while playing the Free Fire and Aqua Ludo games and lost Rs 23,775.
While he is still nowhere to be found, members of his family have been seen frantically searching for him. Her cousin sister has also been seen raising awareness about the harms of online gaming.
“He lost all the money in his bank account playing online games three days ago and ran away from home out of fear. I call on people to let us know immediately if anyone spots him anywhere, ”said Trupti Rekha, the youngster’s cousin sister.
Meanwhile, after failing to find him, the youngster’s worried parents filed a complaint with the Dhamnagar police station.
According to sources, some villagers had warned Khageswar about online gambling and the risk of losing money. However, he ignored the warnings and continued to play the games and lost Rs 23,775 between November 2 and December 1.
The case came to light after his father Padmanav recently updated his bank passbook. It was also learned that the Khageswar had borrowed money from his friends, sister and brother-in-law to finance his gambling addiction.
“He played ludo and gradually spent all the money in small amounts. He ran away from home when I asked him about the money. He’s been missing for three days, ”said anxious Padmanav.
