Panneerselvam urges government to speed up efforts to ban online gambling

On Friday, AIADMK Coordinator O. Panneerselvam urged Chief Minister MP Stalin to speed up efforts to ban online gambling and ensure law and order is maintained in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, he said online games with stakes were addictive and could have dangerous implications. There couldn’t be two opinions that online games amounted to gambling, he argued.

Recalling a decision by the AIADMK government, under Jayalalithaa, in 2003 to ban lottery tickets, Mr Panneerselvam said: “The ban is in effect, media reports that this industry is operational and many influential people are behind her and the police are indifferent.

However, online gambling is no longer regulated. “I asked for it to be banned. The chief minister also said the government would shut down online gambling. But no action has been taken so far. This is reprehensible,” Mr. Panneerselvam said.

He referred to cases of murders and suicides in various parts of the state due to online gambling and said many had lost huge sums. He referred to the legislation enacted by the AIADMK government, which was struck down by the Madras High Court, and said the appeal was pending in the Supreme Court.

“Given the nonchalant attitude of the government, one suspects that the power is providing discreet support [to online gaming]said Mr. Panneerselvam.
