Customers started reporting a problem with their online banking service at 7.45pm last night, according to Down Detector.

By 8:45 p.m., nearly 1,400 people had filed a complaint.

According to the site, 50% of reported issues were with Santander’s Mobile Banking app and 43% with its online banking system.

Santander said: “We experienced issues with our services overnight which impacted customer payments in and out of their accounts.

“This has now been corrected and payments can be made and received as usual.

“We would like to reassure customers that no one will be left behind and we are sorry for any inconvenience.”

For one customer, the issue meant she was unable to feed her children as she was unable to pay for her online grocery store.

“I need to authorize a payment for my online grocery store. Two kids to feed…it’s okay!” Kerry Farquhar tweeted.

“My card is also declined.”

“So I can’t pay for my online purchases tonight because I can’t access the app to check out,” another said.

“Time to move banks had enough of this ‘service’,” another wrote.

“It’s so often isn’t it! I think the same thing,” lambasted a third.

Ruby Khan said: “I need to transfer my mortgage payment. This is ridiculous. I can’t log in to transfer this.”

Lauren Brooks posted: ‘Sorting this – I have a baby without baby milk and the store closes at 11pm!’

On Friday, Santander confirmed they had fixed the issue.

A spokesperson said: “We experienced issues with our services overnight which impacted customer payments in and out of their accounts.

“This has been corrected and payments can be made and received as normal, although there may be delays as we clear the backlog.

“These payments will be processed today and we can reassure customers that no one will be left behind. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

It comes months after the bank suffered a massive outage that left customers stuck in their accounts for hours.

More than 1,000 members were unable to log into their accounts through online banking and mobile apps as of 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 22, according to Downdetector.

More than half of customers reported problems connecting to their mobile banking account, 24% could not access their online banking account, and 23% had problems connecting to the mobile app.

Angry customers have taken to social media to complain about the service crisis, with many unable to make bank transfers or check their balances.
