The Tamil Nadu Online Gambling Prohibition and Regulation Act 2022 was tabled in the state assembly on Wednesday after the government issued an ordinance on the matter.
According to the gazette notification issued by the government and the order passed by Governor RN Ravi earlier this month, the regulations will come into force on the date notified by the government.
The notification said online games and gambling were highly addictive, leading to suicides, affecting mental health and ruining families. It also disrupted the social order, he added.
The Tamil Nadu government had set up a four-member panel under the leadership of Justice (Retired) K Chandru to examine the harmful effects of online rummy and enact new online gambling legislation. The committee submitted its recommendation to Chief Minister MK Stalin in June.
Over the past few years, several people in the state have taken extreme measures after incurring debt due to online rummy and political parties have unanimously called for the game to be banned in the state. Several actors who have advertised online rummy have also been criticized for promoting a game that has damaged the livelihoods of many people.
